Burlington Fun Facts: It is situated about 40 miles northwest of the state capital of Montpelier, about 70 miles north of Rutland, and 95 miles southeast of the city of Montreal in Canada's Quebec province. Major highways serving the city include Interstate 89, U.S. Route 7, and Vermont State Highway 15. Despite popular belief that the city was named for the Earl of Burlington, it is more likely that the city's name is linked to the Burling family of New York City, a prominent and wealthy 19th century family whose members were original grantees of eleven Vermont towns.
Vermont Fun Facts: It is the country’s leading producer of maple syrup and is the home of the popular Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Vermont was initially settled in the early 18th century by both the British and French, and conflicts between the two nations continued until the French defeat in the French and Indian War, after which the land was ceded to England. During the American Revolution, Vermont declared independence separately from the original 13 colonies, although the Continental Congress refused to recognize it. Vermont was finally admitted to the union as the 14th state in 1790, after 14 years as an independentrepublic.
