Better 16mm Film Tranfer Equipment Will Yield Better Quality Video
16mm film has 2K horizontal lines of resolution. In order to archive the film a 2k (2048 vertical ×1556 horizontal) 16mm film transfer is required. Our Pro 2K service scans the film at 2k and down converts it to give you the best looking HD video or SD DVD possible. This is a trick Hollywood has played for years. They start with a high resolution scan of 35mm film at either 2k or 4k. They then down convert and compress it to DVD or BluRay. Only a small fraction of the visual quality is lost during a down conversion because there is so must more data when the video is down converted and compressed they can make a much better looking DVD or BluRay. A DVD from a 2k scan will look 2-3 times better than a DVD from a 480 line film scanner (DVD has 480 horizontal lines of resolution). So, we can play the same trick to give you a great looking transfer of 16mm film to DVD or BluRay and other digital formats.
Even though a 16mm film transfer to DVD is convenient, you may want to consider a 16mm film transfer to Digital Video like HD-AVI or Apple ProRes to maintain more of the resolution from the film. The reason is that DVD only has 480 lines of resolution compared to 1500 lines on your 16mm film. So, in order to preserve more the details on the 16mm film, you want to also put it on a 1080p format like BluRay, HD-AVI or ProRes editing files.
16mm film was used for both amateur family footage and for professional use. Today, Super 16 is used for independent movies. Also, when you transfer 16mm film to DVD or other formats be aware that it can have stereo optical or magnetic sound. Most family footage is silent while most professional footage has optical stereo sound. We can get either type of sound when we convert your 16mm film to DVD or other digital formats.
